With such a variety of public bodies performing a range of functions, there is no single type of 'right person' for a Public Appointment. Boards need a variety of different people with different skills and experience.
It does not matter if you have not worked in a public organisation before – what does matter is that you have a real desire to serve Scotland. Beyond that, you should bring good communication and questioning skills, together with enthusiasm, integrity and sound judgement.
Appointments are made on merit. When designing a public appointments round, the target pool for potenitial applicants is based on the Board's needs such as the knowledge, skills and qualities required.
As long as you have the understanding and abilities to make public bodies work better for the people of Scotland, nothing should hold you back.
